Mesoporous Carbon

Engineered for stable battery performance and a supply chain you can rely on.

Mesoporous Carbon Catalyst Support

Performance isn’t your biggest risk.

Supply is.

Most mesoporous carbons look fine on a datasheet.

The real problems show up later:batch-to-batch variation that shifts pore structure; unclear scale-up path from grams to kilograms; suppliers optimized for publications, not production; “custom” materials that quietly change at scale.

For battery teams, this creates real downstream pain: unstable cycling behavior, re-validation work, and internal pushback when you try to scale.

Mesoporous carbon designed for consistency first

Our mesoporous carbon is engineered around a simple idea:

Consistent pore structure + controlled scale-up = predictable electrochemical behavior

What that means for you:

  • Controlled pore size distribution to reduce performance drift
  • The same material behavior from lab scale to larger volumes
  • Structural robustness that survives real electrode processing

Momentum Materials’ team, with a deep background in material science, focuses on providing innovative material solutions to our customers. Our mesoporous carbon powder (MCP) is engineered to deliver superior performance and versatility for a wide range of applications including Si-C anode, Li-S or Zn-air battery, supercapacitor, adsorption and fuel cells.

Difference Between MCP-4 and MCP-4-HT

MCP-4 is the as-produced mesoporous carbon that contains surface oxygen functional groups (e.g., –OH, –COOH) and is therefore hydrophilic.

MCP-4-HT is high-temperature treated; as a result, surface oxygen groups are removed, making the material more hydrophobic.

The price is different as well, and we explain why in our article Mesoporous Carbon Cost Explained

Capacity of MCP Products

Our annual capacity for MCP products is 2 metric tons. Further scale-up to 600 metric tons is scheduled to be completed by mid 2026.

High-Performance Mesoporous Carbon

Propel your products with Momentum Materials’ advanced mesoporous carbon. Engineered for superior performance, our carbon powder provides the exceptional surface area and controlled porosity your advanced applications demand.

The Momentum Materials Advantage

At Momentum Materials, we specialize in producing premium mesoporous carbon tailored to the rigorous demands of researchers, engineers, and industrial leaders. Developed and manufactured in Calgary, our product offers a distinct combination of high surface area, uniform and 3D-interconnected mesopores, and excellent conductivity, making it the ideal choice for a variety of high-stakes applications. By focusing on quality and consistency, we provide a reliable material that helps you push the boundaries of performance.

Why Choose Our Mesoporous Carbon?

Optimized for Performance

Our mesoporous carbon powder guarantees uniform active particle distribution such as silicon and sulfur, maintains performance by mitigating silicon swelling or sulfur shuttling, and eliminates the extra costs associated with additional active material treatments such as silicon prelithiation. Each batch is subjected to stringent quality control, ensuring consistent particle size, pore volume, and surface chemistry, so you can count on reliable, repeatable outcomes.

Exceptional Surface Area

With a surface area tunable beyond 1500 m²/g, our material provides a vast interface for chemical reactions, adsorption, and energy storage. This high surface area is critical for applications where efficiency and capacity are paramount, allowing you to achieve superior performance in your systems.

Tunable and Uniform Pore Structure

Our mesoporous carbon features a well-defined network of pores, typically between 2 and 50 nanometers. This uniform and 3D-interconnected structure facilitates efficient mass transport and provides accessible sites for catalysts, active materials, and adsorbates, enhancing reaction rates and storage capabilities.

Superior Electrical Conductivity

Engineered for excellent charge transport, our mesoporous carbon serves as an ideal conductive additive or support material. Its inherent conductivity enhances the performance of electrodes in supercapacitors, batteries, and fuel cells, leading to faster charge/discharge rates and improved energy efficiency.

Powering Tomorrow's Innovations

Our mesoporous carbon powder is a versatile material that drives progress across multiple cutting-edge fields.

  • Energy Storage: Acts as a superior electrode material for silicon-carbon anodes, supercapacitors and lithium-sulfur batteries, enabling higher energy density and power output as well as long-term stability.
  • Catalysis: Serves as a robust support for catalysts, maximizing active site exposure and enhancing reaction efficiency.
  • Adsorption & Separation: Provides a high-capacity solution for gas storage, water purification, and the separation of large molecules.
  • Drug Delivery: Offers a biocompatible platform for controlled release applications, ensuring targeted and efficient delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes mesoporous carbon different from other carbon materials?

Mesoporous carbon is distinguished by its network of pores sized between 2 and 50 nanometers. This specific structure provides a unique combination of high surface area and accessibility that isn’t found in microporous or non-porous carbons, making it ideal for applications requiring efficient mass transport.

Our standard mesoporous carbon boasts a surface area of over 1500 m²/g, a total pore volume of approximately 1.5 cm³/g, and low tortuosity. We provide a detailed Certificate of Analysis with every order to ensure our material meets your technical requirements.

Yes. We understand that standard specifications don’t fit every project. Momentum Materials can work with you to customize properties like particle size, pore diameter, and surface functionalization to meet the specific needs of your application. Contact our technical team to discuss your requirements.

We can precisely tune pore size from ~2 to 1000 nm, with either single or multi-modal pore structures, enabled by our hard-template synthesis method. By changing the template size, we directly control the resulting pore size in the carbon. Particle size can be adjusted by grinding, typically to D50 ~1–2 µm and D90 ≤ 5.5 µm, and surface hydrophilicity can be reduced through high-temperature treatment.

We supply our product in various quantities to support every stage of your project, from small grams for initial lab-scale research to metric ton for pilot-scale production and industrial use.

Our production process is governed by strict quality control protocols. We utilize advanced characterization techniques, including nitrogen physisorption , X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), to verify that every batch meets our high standards for purity, porosity, and morphology.
